Full Interview with Jord Hammond
Hey Jord! You are a very talented landscape and travel photographer who’s been growing a huge social media community online. When I started growing my audience online I quickly came to realize that it’s not all sunshine and roses, because with all the good things the negativity increased as well. Have you ever received hate towards your art online or have you felt that others wanted to restrict your creative freedom and what was is about?
While the hate I’ve received towards my art has decreased over time, I’ve definitely experienced it from time to time. I’m not sure if any haters I’ve had were attempting to restrict my creativity, but if they were, they failed miserably.
Did those negative comments or messages drag you down in the beginning and how does it make you feel nowadays?
Hate has come my way in all shapes and sizes, but the most memorable I’ve received came just 4 months into my creative journey after leaving my full-time job in China back in 2016. The comments were made by a creative I had looked up to since starting this process, which definitely knocked my self-belief at the time. They truly made me feel shit initially. Nowadays, I don’t pay hate any attention. Once you understand where it comes from, it makes the process of dealing with it much simpler.
Is there any advice you have for artists on how to deal with hate online?
You’re bound to inspire envy and criticism when you’re chasing your dreams and striving for success. Once I realised that the hate was just a reflection of the hater’s suffering, pain, and unresolved issues, I found that deploying empathy was the best way to handle it. What we feed grows, and what we starve dies. Be kind at all times, it’s one of the most profound strengths you can have.
Can you think of something that we can do as a community to decrease the amount of hate that is spread online?
Just be empathetic towards haters. They’ve got it all wrong if they’re coming at you like that, and most likely need help more than an agitated response.
